Why should I hire a Doula and what are the benefits?

Why should I hire a Doula and what are the benefits?

If you're umming and ahhing about hiring a doula, here a few key things you should know before deciding on one. (Hint hint... this is why they are so fabulous!)

There are several reasons why someone might choose to use a doula during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period:

Emotional Support

Doulas provide continuous emotional support to mothers and their partners. Pregnancy and childbirth can be emotionally intense experiences, and having a supportive presence can help alleviate anxiety, fear, and stress. Although they are focusing on being the mother's 'birth cheerleader', doulas also aid partners with support and provide an opportunity for them to rest during labour. Making a more positive birthing experience.

Physical Comfort Measures

Doulas are trained in various comfort techniques such as massage, breathing exercises, positioning, and relaxation techniques to help manage pain and discomfort during labor and delivery. Many of our FYC birth doulas are well versed in hypnobirthing and Calm Birth techniques so there is no need to 'rehash' your course notes, we are already up to speed!

Information and Advocacy

We never make decisions for you and your family, rather doulas empower expectant parents by providing evidence-based information about childbirth options, procedures, and interventions. They can help families navigate the healthcare system, understand their rights, and make informed decisions that align with their preferences and values.

Continuous Presence

We know that continuity of care is the GOLD standard in maternity care in Australia. Doulas typically remain with the mother throughout labor and childbirth, offering unwavering support and encouragement. This continuous presence can help create a sense of security and confidence during the birthing process.

Improved Birth Outcomes

Research suggests that the presence of a doula during childbirth is associated with various positive outcomes, including reduced rates of medical interventions such as cesarean sections, decreased use of pain medications, shorter labors, higher rates of breastfeeding initiation, and improved satisfaction with the birth experience. Support During Postpartum Period

Your care shouldn't finish after birth. Arguably, this is a minor life event before the marathon of motherhood unfolds and having proper postpartum care is key to kicking postnatal depletion to the curb.

Our FYC doulas  provide postpartum support to help families adjust to the challenges of early parenthood. This may include assistance with breastfeeding, newborn care education, emotional support, household tasks, and referrals to allied healthcare professionals.

Complementary Care

Doulas work alongside healthcare providers such as midwives, obstetricians, and nurses, complementing the medical care provided during childbirth. They do not replace the role of medical professionals but offer additional support and personalized attention to the birthing family.

Overall, the presence of a doula can contribute to a more positive and empowering childbirth experience by providing holistic support that addresses the physical, emotional, and informational needs of expectant parents.
