Busting Baby Sleep Myths: A Mama's Guide to Better Sleep (For You and Baby)

When you're a new parent, it feels like there’s an endless stream of advice coming at you. And let’s be honest, a lot of it is well, less than helpful. So let’s talk about baby sleep myths. If you’re sleep-deprived (which, let’s face it, is almost a given), this one’s for you.

Myth 1: Your Baby Should Sleep Through the Night by 3 Months

If I had a dollar for every time I heard this one,in reality, most babies won’t sleep through the night until closer to 6-9 months (and some even later). It’s normal for little ones to wake up for feedings or comfort during the night. So, if you're in the thick of those midnight feedings, mama, trust me when I say—it’s totally normal. And hey, remember this phase *won’t last forever*.

Myth 2: Holding Your Baby to Sleep Will Spoil Them

Whoever came up with this one clearly wasn’t spending time with babies. Holding your baby while they sleep is a beautiful bonding experience, and it’s not going to spoil them. In fact, it’s actually really helpful for your baby’s emotional development. You’re giving them comfort and security, something that will help them grow into independent little humans later on. So, snuggle up, mama! You’re doing more good than you know. You can even listen to the science behind WHY holding our babies is so important in thispodcast.

Myth 3: A Warm Room is Best for Baby Sleep

Raise your hand if you’ve ever cranked up the heat to make sure baby’s room is toasty warm. I know I have! But, babies actually sleep better in cooler environments (don’t worry, I’m not talking about Antarctica here). The sweet spot is between 20-22°C (68-72°F). This helps prevent overheating and encourages better, more restful sleep for your little one.

Myth 4: Co-Sleeping is Always Dangerous

This is another one of those “do what works for your family” situations. While there are certainly risks to co-sleeping, when done safely, it can be a lovely bonding experience for both you and baby. To make it work, just follow the safe sleep guidelines: use a firm mattress, avoid heavy bedding, and never co-sleep on a couch or armchair. If co-sleeping feels right for you, and you take the proper precautions, it’s okay to snuggle up with your little one during the night.

Myth 5: All Babies Need the Same Sleep Schedule

This is probably the biggest myth of all. Every baby has their own sleep needs. Some may need more naps, others less. A newborn’s sleep needs range between 12-17 hours in 24 hours, so don’t stress about sticking to a rigid schedule. Instead, pay attention to your baby’s cues and adjust as needed.
